A day after a dumper driver crushed an eight-year-old girl to death at Rawalpada in Dahisar (East), police have added drunk driving charge against him.
On Thursday, around noon, Vidya Bansode (8) was walking home with her mother, Rekha, at Rawalpada after dropping her older brother, Chirag, at school when the dumper driver hit them. He halted only to restart the vehicle and run over the child. The driver was arrested and first booked under IPC Section 304 for culpable homicide and his blood sample was sent for testing. "A preliminary medical examination confirmed that the driver, Mukesh Dhale, was inebriated at the time of the accident. He told us that he was headed to park the vehicle," said a police officer. Rekha, who suffered injuries to her arm, told Dahisar police that Dhale could barely walk after stepping out of the dumper truck. "My wife and I are devastated. I hope the police build a strong case against the dumper driver," said Santosh, Vidya's father.
Shopkeepers said they have repeatedly complained to traffic police to restrict the movement of dumper trucks in Rawalpada as there are four schools in the area. "We have been requesting that dumpers be allowed to ply at night and only for an hour or two during late afternoon when children are in school. But our requests have fallen on deaf ears," said Sagarmal Jain, who runs a jewellery store adjacent to the location where Vidya was hit.
